Navarre Boating Safety: How to Keep Your Family Safe on the Water

February 1, 2026

Navarre boating safety is the foundation of a relaxing, memorable family adventure in Navarre. At Navarre Family Watersports Adventure Complex, we welcome thousands of families each year, and our goal is simple: make every experience safe, smooth, and unforgettable. Whether you’re boating, exploring on a kayak, riding a Waverunner, or enjoying our private beach and on-site activities, here are the key safety principles every family should know before heading out.

Choose Calm, Protected Waters

The Intracoastal Waterway offers calmer, more predictable conditions than the Gulf and is perfect for families, kids, and beginners. Waves are gentler, visibility is better, and navigation is easier.

This is one of the major reasons families choose the Santa Rosa Sound for boating.

Keep in mind that while many people love visiting Crab Island for its beautiful water, the area comes with strong currents, heavy crowds, and a more adult atmosphere. The closer you anchor toward the Destin bridge, the stronger and more dangerous the currents become. We personally love when our guests explore Spectre Island. It is much safer, far less crowded, and gives us peace of mind knowing your family can enjoy the day confidently.

Pick Newer, Well-Maintained Equipment

Devil’s in the Details!

Saltwater is brutal on older equipment. Cheaper rentals often use 8–10-year-old boats that have been refurbished only cosmetically.

Our fleet includes newer pontoons, newer motors, and top-tier components — giving you:

  • smoother handling
  • reduced breakdown risk
  • increased safety
  • better comfort for kids and grandparents

(We don’t shout this — but customers feel the difference.)

Down to the Fine Details.

Boats with full wrap-around solid railings are the safest for the Santa Rosa Sound. While boat traffic here is lighter than Destin, you still travel at cruising speeds to reach your destination. Open-style railings can create safety concerns, especially when waves or wind increase. They offer minimal protection, reduce comfort, and increase the risk of passengers or equipment shifting or washing overboard. Cheaper is not always safer, and cutting corners on equipment ultimately cuts into guest safety.

Life Jackets are key to Navarre Boating Safety

Safety First

Florida law requires children under 6 to wear a life jacket at all times on vessels under 26 feet, but our safety recommendations go further:

  • We provide U.S. Coast Guard–approved life jackets at no cost to all guests.
  • Guests should bring their own infant-style, U.S. Coast Guard–approved jackets.
  • All kids and teens should wear a life jacket anytime they’re not seated securely.
  • Always check the fit: It should be snug with no upward sliding over the ears.

Our team can help with proper fit before departure.

Hydrate & Protect Against the Florida Sun

It’s easy to underestimate the heat on the water because the wind feels cool — but dehydration builds quickly.

Bring:

  • plenty of sunscreen
  • plenty of water
  • hats & UV shirts
  • snacks for energy

Hydrate before, during, and after your adventure.

Trust Your Adventure Team

Our Team

Every one of our team members completes extensive training and orientation during onboarding. They must pass both practical and written examinations to work in their area of expertise. Many have years of experience, having grown up in a boating paradise.

We are also one of the only adventure complexes in the region with a full-time marine technician on staff. They keep our equipment in top condition, diagnose issues immediately if they arise, and train our water staff on common concerns — giving guests added peace of mind.

Our team is diligent with safety briefings. Many companies rush guests through this process to move to the next rental. We maintain a strong, well-trained crew to ensure each guest receives a thorough overview of:

  • operating the vessel
  • navigating no-wake zones
  • anchoring
  • weather awareness
  • wildlife considerations
  • emergency procedures

Our crew loves answering questions — especially from first-time boaters.

Waverunner Safety

Florida Fish and Wildlife officers often praise our operation as an example of how a livery should operate. While we are proud of this recognition, what matters most is that our guests are treated like family — and keeping family safe always comes first.

We also staff our facility fully throughout the day. Many watersports companies ramp up staffing just to launch boats, then send staff home. This creates serious safety concerns if something goes wrong. We keep a full team on-site all day, supported by a fleet of Waverunners ready to respond to any issue that may arise.

Plan Around Weather

Afternoon storms are common. We monitor radar and conditions constantly and always prioritize guest safety. If weather becomes unsafe, we reschedule without hesitation. We also have an on-site weather station with real-time alerts to keep you informed all day.
